Hanoi, Vietnam’s capital city, is an enticing mix of history and modernity. The old quarter, with its narrow streets and alleys giving insight into past centuries of life in the city, mixes gracefully with the newer areas of Hanoi, full of cafés, shops and businesses. Religious monuments and pagodas mingle with statues of Vietnamese political leaders. Traditional architecture blends with French colonial planning and modern skyscrapers as a testament to the evolution of the city. Hanoi is a bustling metropolis of nearly 3 million people, many of whom rely on its famous motor scooters to zoom around the city’s streets.
Northern Vietnam boasts some of the most beautiful natural vistas in the world. Hanoi itself is located in the Red River Delta in the center of North Vietnam, and contains dozens of lakes, parks and gardens, giving it a feel of openness and an air of verdant beauty. Ha Long Bay, 160 Kilometers north of Hanoi, features nearly 2000 imposing limestone islands rising majestically from the blue waters of the bay. Rice fields and rolling hills dot the countryside, and beautiful beaches line the coast.
Many traditional handicrafts are still practiced in northern Vietnam, including silk painting, pottery, bronze sculpture, and embroidery. Artists sell their wares in venues across the city from trendy galleries to small shops in the Old Quarter. Food is similarly diverse, from traditional Vietnamese Pho to elegantly prepared seafood dishes, available to suit any visitor’s taste.
